JPS awaits word on 360 megawatt project

The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) is still hoping to get word from the Office of Utilities Regulations (OUR) today regarding whether it will be allowed to construct a 360 megawatt plant.

On Tuesday, the OUR announced it has ended the Request for Proposal process with the JPS in relation to the project.

It said the decision was made after the JPS missed three deadlines to provide certain critical information to the regulator.

However, the JPS has expressed hope it will be able to continue with the project even outside of the original RFP project.

It said it was hoping to get a response from the OUR by today on its latest proposal for moving the project forward.

At that time, the JPS disclosed that it had already invested more than US$2 million over three years preparing for the implementation of the liquefied Natural Gas project.

The OUR has hinted it could reverse the decision first disclosed by Ahmad Zia Mian, who leaves as director general effective today.
