NWU to take legal action against Lamasa

The National Workers' Union (NWU) is contemplating legal action against Lamasa Janitorial Limited over its failure to pay over outstanding sums to former workers.

The positions of more than 400 workers were made redundant last December.

NWU President Vincent Morrison says the union and the former workers have grown tired of the company’s inaction to settle the matter.

Morrison says the company has stayed away from meetings called by the Ministry of Labour to discuss the payments.

He says the union now plans to step up its efforts to get Lamasa to pay up.

The NWU has called the former Lamasa workers to a meeting this Friday at 10 o’clock to discuss the next course of action.

Lamasa’s contract with the Government to provide services at the Bustamante Hospital for children and the Kingston Public and Victoria Jubilee hospitals ended last December.

The workers are owed outstanding sums in notice pay, redundancy and uniform allowances.

The NWU says the company was aware that its contract was coming to an end and as such it should have made provisions to honour its financial obligations to its workers.
