Worthy Park workers on strike

2013-02-11 13:25:02 | (0 Comments)

About 500 workers at the Worthy Park sugar estate in St. Catherine are now on strike.

The workers claim they are being treated disrespectfully by the estate’s Farm Manager and are calling for his dismissal.

Chief delegate at the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union, Arlene Thomas, says the workers’ anger worsened after the Farm Manager tried to cut their pay on Friday.

She says the strike has also affected sugar workers at the Caymanas Estate.

Meanwhile, the BITU’s Assistant Island Supervisor, George Nicholas, says the estate’s Managing Director Peter McConnell has refused to dismiss the Farm Manager.

He says a meeting has been scheduled for 2.30 this afternoon at the labour ministry to discuss the farm workers’ concerns.
