Customs probing $51 million cocaine find

2013-02-12 08:53:36 | (0 Comments)

Just over 58 pounds of  cocaine  with a street value of  $51.1 million has been seized at Kingston Wharves.

In a release last evening, the customs department indicated that the find was made on the weekend at Berth 9, aboard a vessel, which arrived from Suriname.

The vessel was headed to China when the Jamaica Customs Contraband Enforcement Team was alerted that the seal on a container was tampered with.

An examination of the 40 foot container of logs reportedly revealed two army green backpacks with white powdery substance wrapped in brown masking tape.

The container was detained and the 23 packages of cocaine were subsequently taken to the Trans National Crime and Narcotics Division (TCND) where they were tested and weighed.

No arrests have been made in connection with the seizure, however the customs department says investigations are ongoing.
