No DNA match in Irwin rape case, suspects granted bail

WESTERN BUREAU:
The two brothers who were charged in connection with last September’s rape of five females in Irwin Point, St James were offered bail in the Western Regional Gun Court were granted bail today after it was revealed that DNA samples do no match those of the accused.

Kerron and Sheldon Brissett are charged with rape, wounding with intent and illegal possession of firearm arising from the incident on September 24, 2012.

They were offered bail in the sum of $500,000.

However, the brothers’ attorney, Lambert Johnson, told The Gleaner that despite the DNA results, which came from voluntary blood samples the brothers had given, the prosecution is still planning to pursue the case against the men.

The two defendants, who had also previously been offered $200,000 bail on each of the gun-related matters, are scheduled to return to court on March 4.

The nation reacted with shock and horror when news broke that five females, including an eight-year-old girl, were abducted from their home and brutally raped in an open lot.
