Transport Minister Dr Omar Davies says he has asked that a private sector team be assembled to draft a proposal for the expansion of the Ian Flemming International Airport for presentation to the government.

The airport, which is named after the famed British author who settled in Jamaica where he wrote the iconic James Bond series, was upgraded to an international port of entry between 2009 and 2010 and was officially opened in 2011 to target the upscale tourism market.

However, because of its short runway and other physical limitations, the airport has not been able to accommodate some of the larger aircraft.

As a result, a number of local private sector leaders have been pushing the government to expand the facility.

But speaking at a press conference on Friday, Dr Davies said he has had telephone conversation with one private sector individual pushing for the expansion and invited him to assemble a team and present a proposal to the government.
