The murder trial of businessman Patrick Powell is set to get underway in the Home Circuit Court today.

Powell is accused of the 2011 killing of schoolboy Khajeel Mais.

Mais was fatally shot on July 1, 2011 when the driver of a BMW X6 reportedly opened fire on the taxi in which he was travelling.

The St. Andrew businessman then fled to the United States after the killing.

Powell returned days later and surrendered to the police.

During the police investigation, he was asked to surrender his licensed firearm for inspection and forensic analysis, but he allegedly refused to do so.

He was subsequently charged with failing to produce his firearm for inspection and murder.

The firearm case has been stalled pending the outcome of the murder trial.
