Changes are coming for the perpetrators of trafficking in persons who commit other offences in the process.

According to the minister with responsibility for information, Senator Sandrea Falconer at present, there are no specific provisions to deal with trafficking-related offences such as assault, rape and forced labour.

She says as a result, if those offences are committed during trafficking they are prosecuted separately.

However, Senator Falconer says drafting instructions are to be issued to the Chief Parliamentary Counsel to bring all the offences under one piece of legislation.
