NewsCop on wounding charge remanded2013-02-28 09:25:35 | (0 Comments)
A special constable charged with wounding with intent following a shooting incident in September 2012, has been remanded in the Lucea Resident Magistrate's Court.
Special Constable Leary McCauley was arrested and charged yesterday, more than one month after the Director of Public Prosecutions made her ruling. There was no indication why it took more than 30 days for the special constable to be charged with the criminal offence. The complainant alleged that on September 14, 2012 while he was visiting his son in Wood Church District, Lucea, the policeman shot him. According to the complainant, he was attacked by special constable McLeary without cause or provocation. However, the policeman is maintaining that he acted in self defence, after the complainant attacked him. At the same time, the Independent Commission of Investigations says all witness accounts of the incident are similar to that of the complainant. Special Constable Leary will remain in jail until March 5, when the matter will again be mentioned.
