NRSC Vice-Chairman urges Road Traffic Act implemetation

2013-03-02 18:26:55 | (0 Comments)

The Vice-chairman of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) Dr Lucien Jones says there is an urgent need for the new Road Traffic Act to be implemented this year.

Dr Jones says the new legislation will empower the Island Traffic Authority (ITA) to suspend the drivers’ licence of a motorist who exceeds the legal points limit without having to go to court.

He argues that this would make a huge difference in augmenting the efficiency of the new traffic ticketing system which he adds is already having an impact.

The NRSC vice-chairman says with more drivers getting distracted by the use of cellphones, the new act will provide sanctions for persons caught using cellphones while driving.

In addition, he says the new legislation provides for an improved system of driver training and licensing and will seek to ensure that motorists comply with international standards for the tyres on their vehicles.
