Opposition: School year extension won't solve education problems

The Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), says an extension of the school year will not solve basic problems in the education system.

Last week, education minister Ronald Thwaites, announced that the ministry is exploring the possibility of extending the school year beyond the existing 190 days, as part of an attempt to stem the regression of students during the long summer break.

He argued that studies have shown that the eight-week summer break has resulted in the loss of learnt skills for some students.

However, JLP Spokesperson on Education Marisa Dalrymple Philibert says while an extension could be an option, there are more fundamental issues that must first be addressed.

Philibert says she intends to discuss the matter with the education minister.

In an earlier response to the issue, President of the Jamaica Teacher’s Association, Clayton Hall said focus should instead be placed on improving the quality of education.

However, he noted that the Association is also open for discussion on the matter.

The education minister has said no decision will be taken until all stakeholders are consulted.
