Compulsory tax filing for professionals begins April 1

2013-03-14 12:52:22 | (0 Comments)

Compulsory filing of taxes is set to begin in the new fiscal year starting with professional groups such as doctors, lawyers and engineers.

It is part of the government’s effort to collect more revenue by widening the tax net.

Financial Secretary Devon Rowe announced yesterday that compulsory filing would begin on a phased basis during the 2013/2014 financial year, which starts in April.

He told members of the Public Administration and Appropriations Committee (PAAC), yesterday that mandatory filing would start with professional groups.

At the same time, the Government is putting plans in place to roll out its e-filing system.

Rowe said this would also come on stream in the new financial year.

He said e-filing of taxes would be aimed primarily at large taxpayers, who contribute more than 70 per cent of tax revenue.
