Guardsman confirms arrest of a contractor in St James drug bust

Guardsman Limited says it is cooperating fully with the police after one of its contractors was arrested late yesterday when lawmen conducted a search of one of its vehicles and seized a large quantity of cocaine in St James.

Guardman's general manager of operations, Major Ricardo Blackwood in a statement issued a short while ago, said "the individual involved has been relieved of all duties with immediate effect until the investigation is completed".
Blackwood emphasised that the company itself was not under investigation, but said it was cooperating fully with the law enforcers. "We do not in any way, stand for what is allegedly individuals conducting unlawful activity... We anticipate and encourage that the full force of the law be administered to all individuals involved," Blackwood said.
Detectives attached to the Major Organised and Anti-Corruption Task Force, along with teams from the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division and the Jamaica Defence Force, seized the drugs, valued at about $264 million, along the Mount Carey main road in the parish about 8:30 p.m. yesterday.
The Constabulary Communication Network says the joint police and military team stopped and searched the vehicle in which they found about 66 kilograms of cocaine.
The two men, who were in the vehicle at the time of the incident, have been arrested and are to be questioned with a view to charging them. Their identities are being withheld pending more investigations.
