Chronic smokers spending thousands per year
2013-05-31 10:01:58 | (0 Comments)
Executive Director of the Heart Foundation of Jamaica, Deborah Chen, has disclosed that chronic smokers are spending up to half-a-million dollars a year to support their addiction.
Chen said figures collected show that individuals who smoke a pack a cigarette per day spend an average of $250,000 per annum to buy the product.
She said smoking negatively affects human development as the financial resources that could be used to fund a person’s growth are often channeled towards the habit.
The Heart Foundation of Jamaica Executive Director was addressing a JIS Think Tank this week.
For his part, Chairman of the Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control Dr Knox Hagley highlighted that smoking tobacco is not only costly to maintain, but also has detrimental effects on the health and wellness of the body and the environment.
Hagley noted that smoking is the second leading cause of death worldwide and added that one in two chronic smokers will die as a result of a smoking-related disease.
Today is being observed as World No Tobacco Day.
This year’s theme is 'Ban Tobacco Promotion, Advertising and Sponsorship: Save our Youth'.
