State-of-the-art cancer treatment machines coming

Cancer patients are set to benefit from increased treatment options in the public healtháservice.

Health Minister Dr Fenton Ferguson has disclosed that the government has secured funding to procure advanced cancer treatment technology in the form of linear acceleratorámachines.
These state-of-the-art medical equipment are used for radiotherapyátreatment.
Ferguson said one machine will be placed at a medical facility in Kingston and the other in Montego Bay, St James.
The health minister said International Atomic Energy Agency has concluded an assessment and formulation of a cancer control plan foráJamaica.
He said a report should be completedáshortly.
Ferguson said the agency will also help to reintroduce nuclear medicine technology that will improve Jamaicaĺs capacity for diagnosis and treatment ofácancer.
The Ministry of Health has listed cancer care as a topápriority.
The health minister pointed out that non-communicable diseases account for more than 56 per cent of deaths in Jamaica, of which cancer represents 20 perácent.
