G2K blasts JUTC fare increase

The young professional arm of the Jamaica Labour Party, Generation 2000, says the granting of a fare increase to the Jamaica Urban Transit Company, JUTC, is a continuation of the Government's rewarding of inefficiency at the expense of Jamaicans.

Yesterday, Transport Minister, Dr Omar Davies, announced a 25 per cent increase for all public passenger vehicles to take effect on Sunday.
Generation 2000 (G2K) says the decision is a clear indication that Government is out of touch with the realities facing Jamaicans.
Its president, Floyd Green, says the Ministry of Transport should have first looked at internal management changes such as the cutting of spending on consultants, which he says has racked up over $20 million since January last year.
The G2K president says most workers have not had an increase in their wages for the past four years and that the Government is yet to announce any increase to the minimum wage this year.
Green is also arguing that tertiary students, who are faced with increased tuition costs, will be hit hard by the new JUTC rates.
Adult passengers on JUTC buses will now pay $100 up from $80.
Several transport public transport groups have expressed disappointment at the level of increase, which was lower than the recommended 30 per cent.
