Dr Andrew Wheatley – File
Member of Parliament (MP) for South Central St Catherine, Dr Andrew Wheatley is questioning if deputy leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Audley Shaw has any respect for the party’s parliamentary caucus.
Twenty-one MPs make up the JLP’s parliamentary group.
According to Wheatley, it would have been more polite if Shaw had formally informed the JLP MPs prior to writing the party chairman on Saturday confirming speculations that he is considering a challenge against Andrew Holness for the leadership of the party.
Wheatley says while it is Shaw’s democratic right to mount a challenge at the appropriate time, he would have expected Shaw to demonstrate a common respect and inform his parliamentary colleagues.
He says without any forewarning, questions now have to be asked about Shaw’s priorities for the party.
Wheatley has sought to clarify statements he made at a party meeting in his constituency on Sunday.
The MP was reported as saying delegates in his constituency are all backing Holness.
However, Wheatley says he was only reporting the sentiments from a previous meeting adding that Shaw is welcomed to speak to his delegates in hope of getting their support.
At the same meeting on Sunday, veteran politicians Olivia 'Babsy' Grange, Everald Warmington and Sharon Hay-Webster, as well as Shahine Robinson publicly expressed support for Holness.
Yesterday, G2K president, Floyd Green said until a challenge has been officially declared, the current leader enjoys the full support of the organisation.
Political commentator Ian Boyne has said the tone from some senior JLP members suggests that a challenge to Holness' leadership is unwelcomed or unusual.
Shaw yesterday started his consultations on whether to challenge Holness for the leadership of the party in his North East Manchester constituency.
