Dr Garnett Roper – File
Public Commentator, Dr Garnett Roper is accusing the private sector of being political, by using the failed International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreement under the previous Jamaica Labour Party to cast doubt on the current deal.
News emerged last week through the Economic Programme Oversight Committee that sections of the private sector believe the current deal could fail.
The failed deal under the previous administration and the current economic challenges were singled out as reasons for the doubts.
However, Roper says the private sector is critical to any economic success and such beliefs can be self-fulfilling.
He says it is unfair for the private sector to use the failed IMF deal to judge the likely performance of the current programme.
The Oversight Committee's comments were made through a statement by non-public sector members of the committee following an update last Wednesday.
The committee had met to consider the performance of key economic indicators for July and IMF commitments up to August.
