Deadline for JLP delegates’ registration today
2013-09-13 08:20:46 | (0 Comments)
Today is the deadline for more than 2,000 Jamaica Labour Party, JLP delegates to register ahead of a possible leadership challenge at the party’s November conference.
JLP deputy leader Audley Shaw has said he will use a national broadcast on Sunday to announce whether he will mount a challenge against party leader Andrew Holness.
It recently came to light that 25 of the 63 constituencies across the island missed the deadline to register delegates.
This would see about 2,000 of the 5,000 delegates being barred from voting in elections at the upcoming annual conference.
However, the JLP’s Legal and Constitutional Committee put forward recommendations, resulting in the party’s Standing Committee granting an extension to the period for registration.
General Secretary Dr Horace Chang has served notice that tardy caretakers would not be allowed to modify their voters' list, resulting in strong criticisms from Audley Shaw. Shaw argued that he saw no persuasive reason why the recommendation for a two week extension was not accepted unless there is some ulterior motive.
