Diaspora against Goat Islands industrial development
2013-09-17 14:59:33 | (0 Comments)
Representatives of the Jamaican diaspora have come out against proposals for the use of the Goat Islands for massive industrial development.
The Government has said it is giving serious consideration to a proposal from Chinese investors to construct a US$1.5 billion transshipment hub on the protected islands.
Representative of the diaspora in the United Kingdom Sylbourne Sydial argues that Jamaicans are losing ownership of national assets.
"At the same time, just like when Omar Davies, said something about, because of the challenges now, we've got to secure investments for the future. But we don't need to move so urgently where we destroy our present for a future and then look at bauxite, look at the electric company, look at everything," said Sydial.
The opposition from the diaspora is the latest in a series of concerns raised by several lobby groups.
Last week, Works Minister Dr. Omar Davies said a study being done by the Port Authority of Jamaica is expected to be completed by month-end.
He said the study would inform how the Cabinet proceeds.
