Police to become more confrontational in response to surge in violent crime

The Police High Command has signalled that members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force will be taking a more aggressive and confrontational approach in dealing with criminals.
In a media release last night, the High Command said the move was a response to a surge in violent crimes.
According to the High Command there has been a surge in murders and shootings despite increased arrests and gun seizures by the Police.
The release goes on to say that criminals have declared their determination to rob, kill and maim citizens.
This, it says is undermining public security and confidence in the capacity of the Police to protect the public.
As a result the High Command has instructed members of the force to employ lawful means at their disposal to confront and stop violent criminals from further eroding the nationís security.
It is promising coordinated counter gang operations with special focus on downtown Kingston and several other hotspots around the country.
The Police High Command says while police personnel will act professionally and with respect for human rights, criminals cannot be allowed the freedom of movement and action which they exploit to victimise the society.
At the same time the it says the security forceís counter-offensive will occasionally result in inconvenience to some members of the public.
It is urging Jamaicans to keenly observe the actions of its members and hold them accountable wherever there are concerns about professionalism.
