JLP councillors intensify efforts to oust May Pen mayor
2013-09-27 19:51:03 | (0 Comments)
Jamaica Labour Party Councillors are ramping up efforts to remove Mayor of May Pen Scean Barnswell from the chairmanship of the Clarendon Parish Council.
This follows Contractor General Dirk Harrison’s report into the Spalding Market affair and the ruling of the Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn that Barnswell be charged for attempting to mislead the contractor general.
According to minority leader of the council Winston Maragh, Barnswell’s actions have brought the council into disrepute and he must do the honourable thing and resign immediately.
The minority leader warns that if the mayor doesn't resign by the end of September, a no confidence motion will be tabled against him at the next general council meeting in October.
Maragh says the Council cannot have a chairman who is battling criminal charges.
According to Maragh, the Jamaica Labour Party councillors are willing to broker a deal with their People's National Party counterparts to have deputy Mayor Uphel Purcel take over the affairs of the council until Barnswell's legal issues are resolved.
However, a defiant Barnswell has insisted that he will not resign and has again accused the minority leader of playing politics.
