Radcliffe Lewis - File
Head of the Police Traffic Division Senior Superintendent, SSP Radcliffe Lewis, says the police cannot be blamed for public transport drivers who continue to operate even after accumulating hundreds of traffic tickets.
Last Friday, senators demanded answers about how the drivers involved in the deadly Holmwood accident on Wednesday escaped established checks and balances, and were allowed to accumulate more than 200 traffic tickets since 2010 without prosecution.
However, SSP Lewis says it is not the duty of the police to ascertain how many outstanding tickets motorists have.
He says several other Government agencies are responsible for monitoring the number of tickets motorists receive in order to take action against offending motorists, such as deduction of points from licences.
SSP Lewis says in cases where members of the traffic police determine there are outstanding tickets, they do not have the power of arrest.
He explains that motorists may have tickets but have matters before the courts or yet to be tried by the courts.
Lewis is urging the Government to implement mechanisms that will result in the creation of driving records to be accessed by transport owners and insurance companies.
Four students were killed in the three vehicle collision in Manchester last week.
One of the drivers, Omar Bennett is now before the courts on four counts of manslaughter.
