Auditor General called in to examine UTech's finances

The Auditor General has been called in to examine the finances of the University of Technology (UTech).
The move is one of the measures taken by Education Minister, Ronald Thwaites, as it seeks to resolve the dispute between the university administration and staff.
Thwaites says he has also given instructions for the inspection division of the Ministry of Finance to be called in to look at the administrative and governance arrangements at the university.
He says these and other measures have been agreed to by the UTech Council, which is the governing body at the institution.
The education minister says he is hopeful of a path to reconsolidation between the parties.
There has been tension between the unions and the university following a protest last Thursday, which disrupted classes.
The relationship was further strained after the unions placed a full-page advertisement in The Sunday Gleaner declaring that they had no confidence in the UTech administration.
The unions raised questions about the financial affairs as well as governance practices at UTech.
The university later threatened to take action against the unions over what it said were attempts to discredit the institution.
