B'dos AG to discuss landmark CCJ ruling with immigration officials
2013-10-06 11:36:56 | (0 Comments)
The historic ruling in the Shanique Myrie case will be at the top of the agenda when Barbados’ Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite meets with officials from that country’s immigration department next week.
The ruling, which was handed down by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) on Friday, has now established benchmarks on how CARICOM nationals should be treated when they travel across the region.
The judgement also directed Barbados to interpret and apply its domestic laws liberally so as to harmonise them with CARICOM.
Brathwaite confirmed that the meeting will be used to examine the ruling against Barbados’ immigration practices to ensure that deficiencies are identified and addressed.
He says Barbados and other countries across the region should use the opportunity created by the ruling to look at their immigration policies and procedures and ensure that they are in accord with the declarations made by the CCJ.
