Drivers, conductors fingered among persons defrauding JUTC up to $3m daily
2013-10-06 11:44:07 | (0 Comments)
The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) has accused some of its drivers and conductors of defrauding the state-owned company of between $2 million and $3 million daily.
JUTC’s marketing and communication manager, Clinton Clarke, says the fraud involves the sale of bogus tickets to unsuspecting commuters by employees who pocket the money collected from those transactions.
Noting that the practice has spread across all JUTC depots, Clarke revealed that in some cases, passengers were being sold photocopied and test tickets as well as tickets with incorrect routes and times.
He says several persons believed to be involved in the fraud have already been fired.
The JUTC executive argued that the practice is thriving because passengers oftentimes do not inspect their tickets. He urged commuters to begin examining their tickets.
The company is also urging commuters to only accept tickets issued directly from machines placed in its buses.
