Sex Offenders' Registry being finalised
2013-10-08 17:36:47 | (0 Comments)
The Ministry of National Security says it is working to have the Sex Offenders' Registry in operation in the shortest possible time.
The Sex Offenders' Registry was established as part of the Sexual Offences Act which was passed into law in October 2009.
While regulations for the Registry were tabled in November last year, the database has not yet been put to use.
Director of Offender Management in the Ministry of National Security, Laura Plunkett explains that there are some challenges with the establishment of the database and that the software is being finalised.
She says a meeting is being arranged with all the stakeholders in an effort to have the challenges resolved.
Those stakeholders include the Attorney General’s Office, the Ministry of Justice, the police and the Department of Corrections which is the custodian of the project.
There have been calls for the Sex Offender’s Registry to be implemented in the wake of recent sex crimes committed against women and children.
