Doctors' reclassification hearing begins today
2013-10-14 09:33:58 | (0 Comments)
The Judicial Review Court will this morning begin hearing an application by doctors who are challenging the government’s reclassification of the health sector.
The application was filed by Jamaica Medical Doctors' Association (JMDA), which represents junior doctors.
The JMDA took the government to court for what it contends is its refusal to accept the association’s proposal on the reclassification, among other things.
The health sector reclassification was implemented on April 1.
Under the reclassification, nurses, midwives and other professionals in the health sector have seen an adjustment in their category and remuneration packages.
The reclassification exercise has been a long-standing issue in the public health sector.
After years of protests and negotiations, the Cabinet, in May, signed off on the reclassification.
However, some health sector groups objected to aspects of the exercise.
