INTERNATIONAL: Court bans Berlusconi from public office for two years
2013-10-19 18:46:53 | (0 Comments)
A court in Milan has banned former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi from holding public office for two years following his conviction for tax fraud.
The ban must, however, be approved by the parliament before it takes effect.
Officials say the vote will be taken in the coming weeks.
Earlier this month, a cross-party panel of the Italian Senate recommended Berlusconi’s expulsion from the chamber.
If he is expelled from the senate, the former prime minister will lose his parliamentary immunity from prosecution in a string of criminal cases.
The 77-year-old Berlusconi was convicted in connection with a number of deals made by his firm Mediaset to purchase TV rights to United States films.
