Thwaites says the School Suspension Intervention Programme continues to change the lives of many students.
The programme is an initiative of the Dispute Resolution Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the United Nations Children’s Fund.
It targets students with behavioural problems, who are on suspension from school.
Students in the programme are taught anger management and conflict resolution skills.
Speaking at a function yesterday the education minister pointed out that from October 2011 to September 2012, 1,021 students between 13 and 18 years old participated in the programme.
He said they were suspended from school for infringements ranging from extortion, fighting and gambling to formation of gangs.
