Former government minister dies

Former government minister William George 'Billy' McLaren, has died.
A statement from the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Deputy Leader Audley Shaw stated that McLaren died this morning at the age of 84, after ailing for some time.
McLaren served as a Member of Parliament from 1967 to 1976 and Minister of Rural Lands under the JLP government from 1967 to 1972.
He was appointed head of the Christiana Area Land Authority by Prime Minister Alexander Bustamante in 1962.
In 2008, he was conferred with the Order of Distinction, Commander class, by the GovernorĖGeneral on the advice of then Prime Minister Bruce Golding.
In paying tribute to McLaren, the JLP deputy leader said the former minister and farmerís contribution to national development and agriculture should never be forgotten.
Shaw noted that during McLarenís tenure as head of the Christiana Area Land Authority, the agency over-performed on everything in domestic food crop with Irish potatoes production moving from 4,000 tonnes to 28,000 tonnes in four years.
