Ministry dismisses claims teacher not paid for two months

The Ministry of Education has dismissed a teacher's claim that he has not been paid for two months because he refused to relocate to another parish.
Glenville Mitchell, a teacher at the Mizpah All-Age in Manchester told The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre on Wednesday, that he has not been paid since September because he rejected a transfer to a school on the St Elizabeth, Manchester border.
But in a statement this afternoon, the Education Ministry said Mitchell ceased being an employee on August 31, 2013.
It said before that he was employed from 2010 as a temporary teacher to instruct boys in Agriculture for one year.
The Ministry explains that at the end of the period, his employment was extended for another year on two occasions.
It says in an effort to assist the teacher in finding another job, the Ministry’s Regional Director recommended him to the management of St Paul's Primary School in Manchester to fill a temporary position.
The Ministry says the Regional Director later learned that Mr Mitchell reported to St Paul's Primary on the first day of the new school year but did not go back.
It says the Salaries Department was then advised to stop paying Mr Mitchell as his tenure at Mizpah All-Age came to an end on August 31.
The Education Ministry says the General Secretary of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association was informed of the situation.
As a result, the ministry says it’s surprised by statements, attributed to the JTA president elect, Doran Dixon that it owes Mr Mitchell two months’ salary.
