The Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association (JMA) in partnership with the National Commercial Bank (NCB) has expanded the reach of the Buy Jamaican School Book Distribution initiative and will be donating 10,000 exercise books to 18 vulnerable primary and junior high schools within Clarendon, Kingston and St. Andrew. In addition to the books, posters will be distributed to each school for a more permanent display of the Buy Jamaican message.

According to JMA’s Communications and Marketing Officer, Rochelle Roye-DeWalker, “The Buy Jamaican School Book Distribution project has received its greatest support yet with manufacturers Mack Chem Ltd., P.A. Benjamin Manufacturing, Caribbean Broilers Group, Smith and Stewart Distributors, Free Form Factory and Sue Tru Caribbean coming on board to brand and assist with funding the printing of the books.”

Roye-DeWalker states further that the School Book Distribution initiative is an important one for the JMA, as it not only ensures that students are aware of the socio-economic benefits of buying locally manufactured products but also that they are equipped with one of the tools needed to be successful in their educational pursuits.

The schools presented with books since September are St. Albans Primary, Trench Town Primary, Central Branch All Age, August Town Primary, St. Andrew Primary, Franklyn Town All Age, St. Theresa All Age, Whitfield All Age, Maxfield Park Primary, Cockburn Gardens Primary and Junior High, Maverley Primary and Junior High, Grove Primary, Allman Town Primary, Boys’ Town All-Age, St. Jude’s Primary and Cross Primary and Junior High. Jones Town Primary and Louise Bennett- Coverley All Age are set to receive books by November 21.

In January 2012, 7000 exercise books were distributed to 7 schools islandwide. Approximately J$2 million worth of books will be distributed to schools at the primary level under the 3rd phase of the “Buy Jamaican…Build Jamaica” Campaign with NCB, which ends in 2014.
