HEART Trust/NTA's Head Office to be renamed

HEART Trust/NTA | 2012-11-15 00:00:00

The HEART Trust/NTA head office building, located at 6B Oxford Road, Kingston 10, will, as of January 2013, be renamed 'The Edward Seaga Building'.

This announcement was made on November 14 by the Minister of Education, Rev. the Hon Ronald Thwaites, at HEART Trust's 30th Anniversary Pioneers Awards Ceremony & Dinner which was held at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston.

The HEART Trust/NTA - Jamaica's National Training Agency on November 4, began their month long celebrations of their 30 year of operations.

According to Minister Thwaites, the instruction to rename the building comes from the Prime Minister, The Most Honourable Portia Simpson Miller, in recognition of HEART's milestone achievement of 30 years.

"It is my honour to tell you that, as at the 1st January 2013, with the consent of the Board of Directors and Mr Seaga, the HEART Trust/NTA building will be baptized as the Edward Seaga Building," Minister Thwaites said, when he disclosed the plans the Government had in place for the Trust at the start of 2013.

Minister Thwaites added that the renaming of the head office, 'The Edward Seaga Building' was fitting. He stated that when holding the Office of the Prime Minister in the late 80s, it was Seaga's vision and blueprint which brought the Trust into existence to facilitate persons who were not able to finance skills training after graduating at the secondary level.

"Mr Seaga told me that it was in the bush of St Catherine that the idea first came to him. He was the one who determined the shape and form and was bold enough to suggest a method of financing with ample dividend," he said.

HEART Trust is funded through a 3 per cent levy collected from members of the private sector under the Human Employment & Resource Training Act of 1982.

Dr. Moses Peart, Chairman of the Trust in his address, highlighted that HEART was built on a solid foundation and was a little ahead of its time.  “It has stood the test of time and is still relevant.”  He gave the assurance that he and the Board were committed to full and total integration of TVET at all levels.

Outgoing executive director, HEART Trust/NTA, Dr Carolyn Hayle, is in agreement with the renaming of the headquarters in honour of HEART Trust's founding father.

In her address, she said, were it not for his vision over 30 years ago, more than 70,000 of our Nation's youth would not have been permitted to join the labour force.

"At that time, in 1982 on November 4, when Mr Seaga launched HEART Trust, it was a brilliant approach to national development," she said.

In his response to the announcement, The Most Hon Edward Seaga said, "I do wish to thank the Prime Minister for deciding to name the HEART Trust Building after me."
