The Health Minister, Honourable Dr. Fenton Ferguson described the situation at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the St. Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital as “untenable”; after a tour of the facility on November 15, 2012.   The Minister thanked the staff and the patients for their patience but asked for further patience as in the ensuing months a $73.4 million expansion project for the female medical ward will commence.  “As the projects get underway, I appeal to patients, and to staff, to have some patience,” implored the Minister.

The facility has been challenged in recent times with an increase in patient load due to seasonal illnesses, affecting patient flow in the accident and emergency unit and available bed space on the wards. The expanded ward will provide forty-seven additional bed spaces for facility. “The project will significantly ease the pressure at the accident and emergency area, and will improve immediately, the quality of care in this institution,” he said. The Minister also highlighted other issues at the facility, such as a malfunctioning air conditioning unit and leaking roof and mentioned that these issues will also be addressed.

The Minister in a pleased tone said that he looks forward to coming back to break ground and cut the ribbon to open the new facility. The Health Minister also toured other sections of the facility greeting staff and thanking them for their service.
