Food for the Poor Jamaica Chairman Andrew Mahfood has thanked Red Stripe and Supreme Ventures Limited for their prompt and generous support to post-hurricane relief efforts by the charity and the Portland Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund. This will assist the hurricane-ravaged parishes of Portland, St. Thomas, and St. Mary.

The companies have donated J $5.7 million and J $3 million respectively to the post-hurricane relief activities under the call from the Portland Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund. The presentations took place last week.

The funds from Red Stripe (through the Diageo Foundation) and Supreme Ventures Limited will provide much-needed assistance to the affected families, and Mr. Mahfood said he hoped this would inspire other private sector as well as civic organizations, to respond to the dire needs of families reeling from the negative effects of Hurricane Sandy.

“The donation will go towards the construction of homes for the affected families in eastern Jamaica. Our efforts have received a significant boost from your monetary commitments,” indicated the FFP Chairman, who added that his organization will match the private sector contributions up to US$100,000.00 of relief to the affected.

“There has been much damage and your generosity will allow us to do more to get those who have suffered, back to normality. Let us join together and do the best we can for these eastern parishes before Christmas,” Mr. Mahfood pointed out.

Construction by Food For The Poor on new houses for the hurricane victims began this week. Mr. Mahfood said that his team and the Portland Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund would be intensifying their efforts to have the related construction completed as soon as possible.

Red Stripe has commended FFP for its dedication to assisting persons affected by the recent natural disaster. “Thousands of lives were disrupted during the hurricane and as a result the invaluable human service provided by Food For The Poor is in demand more than ever,” stated Head of Corporate Relations at Red Stripe Marguerite Cremin.

“We’re happy to partner with Food For The Poor and the Portland Relief Fund to assist those most affected, so they can return to normalcy as soon as possible.”

Meanwhile, Deputy Chairman of Supreme Ventures Ian Kent Levy who presented the cheque, commented, “Supreme Ventures is proud to continue the tradition of rising to the call, when the nation needs help. The devastation viewed in Portland, St. Thomas and St. Mary necessitates that we come forward and assist with the recovery efforts.”

The Portland Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund was launched on November 1. Food For The Poor is managing / coordinating the disbursements of all donations to the Fund, which go towards welfare, housing, education and agriculture. Only disbursements of kind (not cash) will be made by Food For The Poor.
