Earthquake Awareness Week 2013 to be observed January 20-26

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) will
be observing Earthquake Awareness Week (EAW) 2013 from January 20 to 26,
2013 with a focus on earthquake readiness. Utilizing the slogan, “Wi ready...Yu
Ready?, earthquake awareness week seeks to encourage and promote the
general awareness of existing earthquake mitigation protocols and increasing the
general awareness of the Jamaican public to the importance of preparing for and
minimize the effects of earthquakes.

The week of activities include an appeal to all churches across Jamaica to
support the initiative by way of allowing the reading of a message during their
services on Sunday January 20 and Saturday January 26, respectively in
addition to the sharing of educational materials and tips over the period. Other
activities for the week will include a seminar for media practitioners, a
symposium, presentations, exhibitions and earthquake drills in schools
islandwide.

The ODPEM will officially launch the week’s activities on Monday January 14,
2013 at their offices at 10:00 am. January 14 which is the anniversary of the
Great Kingston Earthquake in 1907 and the ODPEM believes it is quite timely to
reflect on this major disaster event, and focus on ensuring the nation is fully
prepared in the event that another such event were to hit the island. The ODPEM
will also be handing over a cheque in the amount of US$30,000.00 to the
Earthquake Unit for the purchase of accelerometers which will be placed on
buildings for measuring the seismic activity in Kingston. A full list of activities for
the week with specific activity detail will be announced at the Press Briefing on
Monday.
