In Jamaica, German Ambassador Josef Beck and French Ambassador Ginette de Matha will jointly commemorate the 50th anniversary with a reception on 22 January 2013 from 7 pm to 9 pm on the Lawns of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, 10 Waterloo Road, Kingston 10. This event will feature a poster exhibition on the Franco-German ties. A string chamber orchestra under the lead of Mr. Steven Woodham performing German and French classical music will also be part of the ceremony.

22 January 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Élysée Treaty which formed the basis for the German-French friendship. It was a central landmark for our bilateral relations that are unique in its density and intensity. A German-French year was launched by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande on 22 September 2012, which is also the 50th anniversary of then French President Charles de Gaulles’ “speech to the German youth” in Ludwigsburg. This year will value the important achievements of the past but also focus on what lies ahead.

The Elysée Treaty set the seal on reconciliation between the two countries. With it, Germany and France established a new foundation for relations that ended centuries of rivalry between them and allowed them to make a decisive contribution to the construction of Europe. With a view to the future Germany and France will have a great responsibility for further European integration and in determining the role Europe will play in the world.

As the main event the 50th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty will be celebrated on 22 January 2013 in Berlin. There will be an anniversary meeting of the councils of ministers and a joint assembly of the German and French Parliaments together with representatives from the German Bundesrat and the French Senate. The jubilee year will come to an end when the 50th anniversary of the German-French Youth Office is being celebrated on 5 July 2013 in Paris.
