PNP HEADQUARTERS | 2013-01-29 00:00:00

The People’s National Party, PNP mourns the recent loss of one of its outstanding advocates, Sam Lawrence. His contribution to Jamaica saw him elected to the House of Representatives in 1989 as the Member of Parliament for East Portland. His work as a Member of Parliament saw him undertaking difficult assignments in the challenging areas of Development, Planning & Production. Although retired in 1997, Comrade Lawrence up until his death, continued to serve the nation as an invaluable part of the leadership of the PNP as a member of its National Executive Council, NEC.

Sam Lawrence was of the view that the expansion of water supply to rural communities would have significant benefits for Jamaica's economic and social development including the attraction of new businesses, increased employment, and reducing the health risk associated with the consumption of untreated water.

It was Cde Lawrence’s sustained work on central water, drainage, and sewerage projects which brought it to the fore in Policy directions during his time. In the latter part of his career, Sam Lawrence became an advisor to Caricom serving in Guyana.

Party Chairman Robert Pickersgill said that “Comrade Lawrence’s contribution to the Party’s recent one day workshop on economic growth held last Sunday in Trelawny will form part of a document that will guide the governing Party’s discussions of the way forward, thus ensuring that Cde Lawrence’s wisdom will continue to serve Jamaica in the future.”

The Chairman further said: “The Party is honoured to have had a comrade like Sam Lawrence, and will forever be grateful to him for his lifelong contribution to the growth and development of the nation, through active service in our great Party.  The dedication and professionalism which he brought to his duties on behalf of Jamaicans will never be forgotten”.

The Party extends condolences to his widow Lois Layne-Lawrence, his family and community, as the leadership and membership of the Party share their grief.
