The Programmes Coordination Division (Junior Centres) announced that they will receive a donation from, Mr. Colin Harris, a benefactor of the Junior Centre who resides in Canada. The cheque will be presented on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. at the East Street Junior Centre. The funds will help to support and sustain the after school Music Development Programme of the Junior Centres.
Mrs. Justice Pamela Appelt, former member of council of the Institute of Jamaica, introduced Mr. Harris to the Junior Centre because of his desire to support an organization whose primary focus is on children and their well being, stated Mrs. Jacqueline Bushay, Director of the Programmes Coordination Division.
His first donation, a cheque in the amount of Two Thousand Canadian dollars ($2000.00 CAD) was presented to the Junior Centre on April 20, 2012. The contribution was used to purchase the following instruments:
- 1 Alto Saxophone
- 1 Five piece drum set
- 6 Cowbells
- 6 Pianicas
- 1 Congo drum
- 4 Triangles
Since then Mr. Harris has visited the Junior Centre on numerous occasions and continues to support all programmes of the Centres.
The Junior Centre has become a place where young people ages 6 – 18 years develop and foster their creative skills and are exposed to a variety of activities. Music classes are held at the East Street Centre Mondays to Thursdays, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. While at the Greater Portmore Centre, classes are held Mondays to Thursdays, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., Fridays, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:00 – 1:00 p.m.
