As Diplomatic Week 2013 moves into high gear, ten new Ambassadors and High Commissioners today (Monday, January 4) presented their Credentials to Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen during brief ceremonies held at King’s House.
Presenting their Letters of Credence as their respective countries chief diplomatic representative to Jamaica, were the High Commissioners for Malaysia and Zambia and the Ambassadors of Portugal, the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, the Republic of South Korea, the Republic of Indonesia, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Kingdom of Norway, the Republic of Austria and the Republic of Turkey. These Ambassadors and High Commissioners will not be resident in Jamaica.
Sir Patrick Allen assured the diplomats of the tremendous importance which Jamaica attaches to its relations with their respective countries at both bilateral and multilateral levels. He noted that the values and principles shared as members of the United Nations and as parties to core International Treaties and Conventions were the foundation of those relations.
“Our enduring friendship is fruit of the bilateral collaboration at State levels, as well as the interaction of our peoples through tourism, academic and cultural exchanges, sports and migration, among others,” the Governor-General added.
Sir Patrick Allen noted that the Ambassadors and High Commissioners were assuming their roles at a time of global challenges which undermine security and affect the economy. He noted that the spectre of the 2008 global financial and economic crisis had not yet evaporated. Like other small, vulnerable and heavily indebted countries, Jamaica was striving to identify solutions which would lead to sustainable development.
“I believe that we are a people that are blessed by tremendous creative genius, resilient, hospitable and at heart, optimistic. No wonder Volkswagen has sought to capitalize on those traits of the Jamaican people,” the Governor-General said.
He congratulated each Ambassador and High Commissioner on their appointment and wished them success in their professional life, as well as good health and happiness. The Diplomats conveyed greetings from their Head of State and assured the Governor-General of their Government’s policy for further strengthening relations with Jamaica.
Sir Patrick and Lady Allen will host the new Ambassadors and High Commissioners, their senior Colleagues in the Diplomatic Corps and specially invited guests to the Annual Diplomatic Dinner which will be held at King’s House on February 7, 2013. This dinner is traditionally the high point of Diplomatic Week which began on February 3.
