Minister of Tourism and Entertainment, the Hon. Dr. Wykeham McNeill is extending sincere congratulations to Jimmy Cliff O.M., for winning the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album for his album ‘Rebirth,’ during the 55th Annual Grammy Awards.
“Jamaica celebrates with Jimmy for his noteworthy achievement,” he said. "This is a very prestigious award which recognizes his outstanding musical talent. A win for him is a win for us all. He has produced great music consistently throughout the years and has won the award before. His album ‘Rebirth’ adds to the outstanding body of work which has helped to advance reggae music on the international stage," he added.
One of the tracks from the album, Jimmy Cliff’s new remake of the Partridge Family theme song "Get Happy" was used recently in Volkswagen’s highly publicized 2013 Super Bowl advertisement. Minister McNeill outlined that "reggae is a musical genre which remains widely accepted on the world stage, our musicians, like Jimmy, continue to represent our country well and play a significant role in building brand Jamaica. My heartiest congratulations to him on an award well deserved!”
The four other albums which vied for the award included - Miracle by The Original Wailers; Tomahawk Technique by Sean Paul; New Legend - Jamaica 50th Edition by Sly and Robbie and The Jam Masters; and Reggae Got Soul: Unplugged on Strawberry Hill by Toots and the Maytals. But despite stiff competition, Jimmy Cliff held his own and emerged victorious. Minister McNeill also congratulated all the nominees noting that “I commend all the nominees as they are true musical ambassadors who continue to keep Jamaica’s flag flying high at home and overseas.”
