The Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association (JMA) project “Improving Packaging for Export Competitiveness” continues to build momentum. An aspect of Component 3 -“Identification and Dissemination of Information on Best Practices” is currently underway as partners attend the West Pack Trade Expo.

The project which aims to improve the quality of local manufacturing packaging is funded under the Caribbean Export Development Agency Direct Assistance Grant Scheme, which is financed by the European Union.

The eight (8) month project is moving steadily, on track to accomplish targeted goals within the given time frame. The objective of Component 3 is to identify labeling and packaging best practices that can be transferred or adapted in the local market place. This will be achieved by having partners as well as JMA staff participate in an International labeling/packaging Expo, in particular the West Pack Expo.  West Pack is among America’s premier packaging exposition and conference. The three (3) day Expo scheduled for February 12-14 is located in Anaheim, California and boasts the latest packaging technologies, materials, equipment and seminars with leaders of the industry.

Information gained at the West Pack Expo by partners and JMA will be disseminated to project stakeholders such as local graphic artists, manufacturers and the exporting community by hosting a Debriefing Session, as well as the inclusion of participants’ reports in JMA’s official newsletter “Manufacturing Matters.”
Stakeholders participating in the West Pack Expo include partners, Mr. Alan Harrison, General Manger of Labels Jamaica Ltd, Mr. Jadesion Swiel, Graphic Artist at Continental Baking Company, Mr. Steven Sykes, Production Manager, Continental Baking Company and Ann Marie Walter Allen, Marketing Manager, Continental Baking Company; while the JMA staff consists of Ms. Kamesha Turner, Business Development and Projects Manager and Ms. Andrea Leslie, Membership Officer.

Additionally, from the tender issued on November 11, 2012, consultant Prism Communication Ltd. has been procured to develop and implement actions of the project. According to the JMA Business Development and Projects Manager, Kamesha Turner, the penultimate stages of the project is soon at hand which is the selection of local graphic artists, manufacturers and BSO’s to participate in workshops and training sessions. Expressions of interest will also be  sent out shortly  for assistance to be provided to manufacturers for product packaging assessments. Ten (10) companies will be selected under this component.
