G2K blasts Cabinet for putting party over country

"We must never allow our political parties to believe that they can sacrifice the country's need for good governance, to protect their narrow party interests," said Floyd Green, President of G2K.

Green was responding to the decision by the Cabinet not to relieve Minister Azan of his position of Minister of State in the Ministry of Transport and Works.

Generation 2000 notes that Mr. Azan is not new to the procedures of the Parish Council and has indicated that he did give permission to a private contractor to build on Government Land. The organisation further added that reports have also revealed that Mr. Azan has more than a passing acquaintance with the contractor whom he gave permission to construct the shops at the market.

"For the cabinet to believe that the action of Minister Azan, who has acknowledged disregarding the rules, has no bearing on his job of Minister of State is frightening. It makes every member of the cabinet complicit in the wrong doing and perpetuates the cycle that has destroyed our country for 50 years, that of doing what is in the party's interest and not the country's," added Green.

G2K noted that in the Prime Minister's inaugural address, she stated that "Jamaicans want a more transparent and accountable government and should accept nothing less". The Prime Minister must now demonstrate a powerful political presence and remove Azan.
