At the exquisite 20th Anniversary Banquet of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) last evening, 13 prestigious Awards were presented to pacesetters in the promotion of road safety.

Jamaica’s national coordinating body for road safety promotion, the NRSC received the prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.  His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent, Member of the British Royal family and Patron of the Awards, who is on a 5-day working visit to Jamaica, presented the Award. HRH Prince Michael of Kent was the Guest of Honour and Guest Speaker at the Anniversary Dinner at Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.

Prime Minister and NRSC Chairman, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller received the Award, on behalf of the Council. In congratulating the NRSC on receiving this international award, His Royal Highness said: “In Jamaica we have seen how effective leadership and a concentrated effort by a dedicated team can make a real difference and save lives. What the NRSC has done over 20 years is impressive and serves as an example to other countries both small and large.”

The HRH Prince Michael International Road Safety Award is presented to organisations in recognition of outstanding achievement and innovation, which improve road safety. Since its establishment 20 years ago, the NRSC has implemented advocacy and other programme initiatives which have helped in reducing casualties on Jamaica’s roads, with the numbers of road traffic deaths showing steady decline over the years, to below 300 last year.

Expressing her delight about the Award during her official welcome at the Banquet, Prime Minister Simpson Miller said: “We are truly grateful to His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent for recognising our efforts in encouraging responsible road usage in Jamaica. This Award and the visit of Prince Michael to make the presentation will not only bolster the efforts of the NRSC but serve to inspire even greater levels of inter-sectoral collaboration toward achieving further reductions in road fatalities and injuries.”

Commenting on the posthumous award to be presented, Dr. Lucien Jones, Vice Chairman / Convenor, NRSC announced that the late Professor the Hon Sir John Golding was selected, because of his pioneering work in road safety. “Jamaica is undoubtedly a better place because of the groundbreaking research and advocacy of the late Professor the Honourable Sir John Golding,” stated Dr. Jones. “The research findings of this late orthopaedic surgeon on the deleterious effects of crashes on Jamaicans, awoken our nation to the need for improved road safety as an emergency of national importance.”

Dr. Jones told the audience that all the persons being honoured by the NRSC have at some point in the Council’s history, “played a bold and empowering role in the 20-year journey of the National Road Safety Council. During this the 20th Anniversary of the NRSC, we salute and recognise the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) for your invaluable partnership, leadership in the international arena and support of the NRSC,” asserted Dr. Jones..
