Stakeholders look to enhancing social and economic impact of tourism

The Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment (MTE) will host the sixth annual Tourism Outlook Seminar (TOS) at the Montego Bay Convention Centre at Rose Hall in St. James on September 5 and 6, 2013 under the theme, “Tourism: Enhancing Social and Economic Impact.”

The TOS seeks “to create a forum where industry stakeholders can be apprised of the government’s vision for tourism, review trends of the tourist industry, communicate issues affecting operations and suggest solutions for the benefit of individual businesses and the industry at large”. Target groups for the two-day seminar are industry stakeholders from Jamaica and the Caribbean. Some 350 participants are expected, among them, investors, academics, travel and Diaspora media.

Hon. Dr. K. Wykeham McNeill, Minister of Tourism and Entertainment, will give the keynote address on day one, with greetings from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) and Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA).

With the objective in mind, several interactive sessions featuring key players in tourism at the local, regional and international levels, have been planned. These kick off with a presentation on “Enhancing Competitiveness through Travel Facilitation”.

A critical look will be taken at “Multi-Destination and Air Connectivity” followed by an address on “Public and Private Sector Collaboration on Enhancing Tourism Linkages for Social and Economic Impact” and a panel discussion.

Minister of State, MTE Damion Crawford will set the stage for day two with his presentation preceding successive session that offers an insight into “Natural and Manmade Crisis Management” They give way to consecutive on “Environmental Sustainability and Conservation Best Practices” and “Opportunities for Partnership with the Entertainment and Creative Industries”.

Tourism Outlook Seminar 2013 will close with a session on “Creating Resonance in the Vacation Experience: Developing the Local Memorabilia Sector” but delegate and guests will also have an opportunity to share ideas on a social level when Iberostar Hotel hosts a “Mix and Mingle Cocktail Reception” at The Suites on opening day.
