Nelson Mandela UWI Public Panel Discussion next week

The Department of History and Archaeology and the Department of Government, the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus will host a joint panel discussion on the life, work and legacy of Nelson Mandela, Leader of the Anti-Apartheid Movement, Liberator, and former President of the Republic of South Africa.

The Panelists include Dr. Enrique Okenve, Lecturer in African History, Department of History and Archaeology, who will speak on "Mandela and the Anti-Apartheid Movement”; Dr. Raymond Brown, Diplomat in Residence, Department of Government, who will speak on "The USA the Anti-Apartheid Movement"; Professor Rupert Lewis, Retired Lecturer, Department of Government, who will speak on "The Politics of Mandela's Legacies." Professor Waibinte Wariboko, Lecturer in African History, is the Discussant.

Following his release from prison in 1990, Mandela embarked on a world tour, which included Jamaica, during which he visited The University of the West Indies, Mona, on July 24, 1991. On that occasion The University conferred upon him an honorary degree – the Doctor of Laws (LLD).

Arguably, Mandela is regarded as the most outstanding international statesman of the highest order of the 20th century, having inspired many persons from all walks of life.

The event titled “A Tribute to Madiba Nelson Mandela, His work and Legacy,” will be held on Wednesday, 18 December 2013 commencing at 5:00 pm, and will take place in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Humanities and Education, The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, beginning at 5pm.

Dr. Lloyd Waller, Head of the Department of Government pointed out that, “Mr. Mandela’s effect on the world is nothing short of awe-inspiring and must never be forgotten. The University will continue to honour him and ensure that his work and contributions to South Africa, Africa and the entire world is not only studied but replicated where possible to make this and many other societies better”.
