Executive Director of the National Family Planning Board, and reproductive health expert, Dr. Olivia McDonald, has been invited to represent Jamaica at the Global Forum on Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPTs) for Reproductive Health, January 11 to 12, 2012 in London, United Kingdom.  The invitation was extended by the Wellcome Trust and the Initiative for Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (IMPT).

MPTs are products designed to provide women with simultaneous protection from unintended pregnancy, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections; offering them greater control over their reproductive health choices.  Invitees will “help shape the evolving strategy for accelerating the development of MPTs and their introduction in regions with a substantial unmet need for these prevention options”.

Objectives of the Global Forum on MPTs as outlined are to;
  • Review the current status of MPT development and highlight needs and potential challenges
  • Identify the types of target populations, in specific geographic regions, most likely to benefit from MPTs
  • Significantly expand international multisectoral input into possible MPT product development plans, including the perspectives of product developers, providers and end-users.
  • Expand discussion of the critical path for regulatory approval of MPTs beyond the USFDA, to include the views of African, Asian, and European regulatory authorities
  • Foster a global perspective and encourage international support for the MPT Initiative
  • Seek Consensus on next steps.
