The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) in collaboration with the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) continue to report steady progress of Phase 2 of ground command operations at the Riverton City Landfill. Phase 2 of ground command operations led by the Jamaica Fire Brigade involves further smoke abatement and complete restoration to the Landfill.

Persons in the vicinity of Spanish Town Road, sections of St. Catherine which includes the communities of Cooreville Gardens, Gregory Park, Waterford and the Portmore Toll Plaza will continue to experience smoke nuisance during the course of the day as a result of the ground command operations and the current prevailing winds condition.

The inter agency team recognizes that this is adding to the discomfort of residents in the affected areas and is reminding persons to take the necessary precautions:

Avoid or reduce exposure to smoke by closing window and doors and remain indoors as much as possible. This is especially so for those persons who suffer from allergies, asthma and other respiratory conditions; and elderly and young.

- Cover nose and mouth with a clean wet rag or cloth to minimize effects of the smoke.

- Avoid exposing laundry outdoors since these can become contaminated, stained and foul smelling.

- Visit the nearest health facility or doctor if they start having shortness of breath, wheezing or severe coughing, especially those with respiratory illnesses.

The team continues to work assiduously to bring an end to this existing situation and will give updates to the public on the progress of the remaining operations.
