While many of Jamaica’s children clad in crisp new uniforms, colourful backpacks and armed with all the items on their booklist enjoyed a great start to the much-anticipated new school year, others were at home unsure if they would ever grace a classroom.

This unfortunate situation is no stranger to some students at the Whitfield All-Age School in Kingston 13.  As told by the Principal of the institution, Mrs. Nadine Bennett-Hibbert, “Some of the parents just don’t have it, they would love to send their kids to school, but they simply can’t.”
It was this need that drove the Digicel Diaspora team to the community.

With backpacks, notebooks, pencils, book grants and school bursaries, the Whitfield Community enjoyed a ‘Get them in School’ treat on Sunday, September 7 courtesy of the telecommunications company.

“Companies every year do so much to help children and parents for the stressful back to school period, but in some cases, many of the students still do not make it to school. This year, in addition to the back to school initiatives that we’ve hosted leading up to the school year, we decided to also host a treat after the school term has started to help target and assist those students who were not able to start school,” said Neil Lawrence, Diaspora Manager at Digicel.

With the help of the Principal of Whitfield All Age, Digicel identified 20 students who were most in need. Ten received book vouchers while the others received bursaries to cover their school expenses.

Overjoyed at the company’s charity, Mrs. Bennett-Hibbert said, “Digicel’s contribution will go a far way, especially for the children who are preparing for national exams. They will now have the necessary resources to study from and it will give them a sense of independence and pride to have their own tools to fully function in the classroom. It has also eased the burden of the parents and the school in finding these items which the students are most in need of. I am thankful that Digicel chose Whitfield All Age for this wonderful initiative.”

All the students who turned out to the event also received backpacks and notebooks as well as treats courtesy of partners, Pepsi Cola Jamaica and CB Chicken.
